BoCC vs EAS

A comparison

Inspired by the idea of Stefan Pohl EAS tool I decided to write my own, the BoCC tool ,this page shows the differences and the similarities. Both are meant to list the most aggressive chess engine.  As such a new sort of competition made its entry, STYLE PROGRAMMING. If you are bored with ELO PROGRAMMING or need a temporarily break, you hit the elo wall, if you are fed up with 90% draws, want something new : consider STYLE PROGRAMMING and create an engine that plays fantastic chess, a new challenge.

It is much more simple with NNUE than with HCE programming, just feed the neural net with much king-safety and high mobility positions, increase the scores if needed and test your style engine with the BoCC and EAS tools to measure your progress. A new world will open.

In a nutshell, EAS considers 3 evaluations : sacrifices, short games and bad draws. BoCC has 2, king-attacks and short games, the latter in a different way than EAS.

We maintain 3 rating lists of different elo pools,  the strongest of CEGT 3578 elo, the medium of CEGT 3500 elo and an entry elo pool of CEGT 3400 elo, the latter available for engines >= 3100 elo, such as HCE Komodo 14.1 with its Aggressive option and doing well. Meaning each of the top style engines (Patricia, CSTal, Rebel, Velvet) has to play 3 x 15.000 = 45.000 games for a reliable style rating.

The BoCC vs the EAS 3578 elo rating list

Remarks

. On BoCC Rebel-Extreme-1.1 seems to be the best KING-ATTACKER by a small margin. CSTal 2.1 EAS is the overall leader. On EAS Rebel and Cstal switch places.

. Surprisingly ELO engines Fritz-20 and Stockfish 17.1 do very well, imagine if they decide to create a style engine.

. After Stockfish 17.1 no engine comes close after, see the BoCC page.

Remarks

. On BoCC style numbers  are lower than on the 3578 elo pool.

. Interesting, on BoCC  ELO engines Stockfish 17.1 and Fritz 20 surpassed STYLE engines Velvet 8.1, Patricia 4, Patricia 5 and Rebel EAS 2.0. On EAS not much has changed.

. A new style engine made its entry, Komodo-14.1 with the Aggressive setting. Very good for a HCE engine!

. On EAS the old Patricia 3.01 made an incredible style point jump of ~120.00.

OBSERVATIONS

. Both BoCC and EAS list engines based on style points are in about the same order.

. So far the similarities.

. What greatly differs are the output PGN's of EAS and BoCC, EAS offers games with sacrifices from 1 to 9 or higher pawn units and a short wins PGN. BoCC on the other hand offers games with king-attacks and also (but different than EAS) 3 short wins PGN's dived into 3 categories, won games 10 moves after the last book move, same for 15 and 20 moves. Especially the games in the 10 moves PGN are quite spectacular since we in general are talking engines >3400 elo.

. The draw rate among those strong engines is extremely low, varying between 40-45%. And that with balanced openings.
